Melanie travelled quite extensively before she settled down in Anguirle, and even some since then. One of these expeditions, while searching out some obscure relation to fill in a blank part of Etain's genealogical records, she spent some time at the court of the Queen of Marel Hill, a minor but respectable monarch of the Springlands. While there, she by sheer chance foiled a midnight attack on the Prince Royal, and was rewarded with the undying devotion of the Prince (now King) and a knighthood. The Ash Lances haven't been a fighting regiment since Marel Hill started forming musket brigades, but a knighthood carries a certain amount of social esteem and precedence, a shiny silver medal, and an ash-shafted spear suitable for carrying on state occasions.
