Previously, in Trip's Life...

30 September 2009 - Wednesday

Work: Yay, I have the internets again!

Recruiter phonecalls: 1. Also, looks like there may be movement on the contracting front.

Visual Entertainments: Started the third disc of Baccano! for something to watch as an alternative to dropping burrito crumbs into my keyboard.

Cats: Twelve paws!

29 September 2009 - Tuesday

Work: FAIL, but it's not my fault! The faceless corporation that bought my friendly local ISP has exploded my internets!

Visual Entertainments:

  • Bleach 157-158: Still too much Comic Sidekick, but at least Ishida got to show off his new magic item.
  • Code Geass 3: Oh the doom!
  • Eden of the East 4-5: Now we know a bit more, but perhaps only enough to become more confused.
  • Avatar 2.14: Apparently the local authorities have not heard what happened to the Fire Nation fleet at the north pole, or at least they're in denial about it.

Marith missed pretty much everything except Avatar because her company is determined to learn the hard way that they need procedures.

Cats: Twelve adorable paws!

28 September 2009 - Monday

Work: Jobs applied for: 1.

Food: Chef Chu's with Ayse! Ayse is going to have a baby soon, so she is entitled to as much Chinese food as she wants, especially the bracing ginger soup with whole clams. (It seems wrong to not be able to crunch up the shells to build stronger bones and teeth, but oh well.)

Cats: I saw Aspen sitting on the shelf on the balcony tonight! She ran away as soon as she noticed me, which is how I could which cat the silhouette was. :)

Writing: FAIL.

27 September 2009 - Sunday

Gaming: Apparently the signals I sent were not the same as the signals received by the players, and instead of fleeing the alerted temple, they fought its overwhelmingly powerful defenders until Roger was dead and Zellos was unconscious and dying. Damaia and Naled then fled back toward civilization. I don't know if they plan to return to the Lost Tiefling City Of Volcanic Doom when they're higher level or not.

Since their previous characters obviously weren't powerful enough, Jeremy and Dave are using races and classes from the PHB2 for their new character (a longtooth shifter shaman and goliath warden, respectively). No, I don't know why they aren't kicking me out and making Earl GM.

Gaming, Redux: Last session of Thrace before Ayse and Ken have a BABY! The PCs interacted with a minor noble who is infringing on what they regard as their turf. The official documentation is unclear, possibly because the provincial governor is secretly dead. No villains were slain, no loot was pillaged.

Cats: Aw, Aspen went out on the balcony and sat in a sunbeam! Kawaii!

Writing: Double check.

26 September 2009 - Saturday

Gaming: Spent all day preparing for Palo Alto D&D tomorrow. I wrote up many things including skill challenges and mutant kobolds, because I'm not sure which way the PCs will go after they flee the duergar temple that had noticed their presence.

Visual Entertainments: All of third disc of Zone of the Enders: Dolores. Yay Mars!

Cats: Twelve fuzzy paws!

Writing: FAIL (used up my brain on mutant kobolds).

23 September 2009 - Wednesday

Work: Jobs applied for: 2.

Gaming: I think I may have reached the point where I need to stop thinking about the next session and start preparing the Stat Blocks of Dooom. Muahahahahaha.

Visual Entertainments: Wednesday Night Whatever is finally back on Wednesday! For, er, one fortnight, after which it explodes or moves to Ken and Cera and Julia's or something. Anyway, we have now seen the episode of new Dr Who in which Adam reveals how fit he is for the role of companion.

Food: Ayse and I had a clever plan to eat dinner at Chef Chu's after she had her endoskeleton adjusted, but Ken unexpectedly escaped his conference so instead we had to have pasta with pecans, chard, caramelized beets, sherry, balsamic vinegar, and I think something else. Woe! Woe was us!

Cats: I worried more about Aspen because she let me oppress her with the mat-removing shears twice, but when she got sick of it she scampered away in her usual fashion. Also she ascended the Cat Tree of Crunchyfoods without apparent problem, so I think she is probably okay. Maybe.

22 September 2009 - Tuesday

Work: FAIL.

Visual Entertainments:

  • Eden of the East 3: The plot thickens! Or something. That was an awfully convenient misdial, wasn't it?
  • Code Geass 2.1-2.2: That was unexpected!
  • Avatar 2.12.-2.13: Toph is still most awesome. I want to tell her about diamonds.
  • Bleach 156: Trying to disguise a lack of content with extended recaps is doomed to failure. Also, ENOUGH WITH THE COMIC SIDEKICKS! Gah!

Food: Vegetables coming out my ears!

Cats: It looked like Aspen was limping this morning when Ghirardelli was chasing her, but I didn't see it again even though I annoyed her into running away from the Grasping Hands of Oppression several times. I even reached into her fort of old SF magazines and seized her and flurfled her belly! But I paid for it.

Work: Status of further contract work: up in the air. Reminders sent to people I phone-interviewed with who seemed to like me: 1. Rejections from people I phone-interviewed with who seemed to like me: 1.

Gaming: Argh, scheduling! This coming Sunday is supposed to be a PAD&D4 Sunday, but it's also the last Sunday Ken and Ayse are likely to have free before they become PARENTS AUGH so we'd like to play Thrace, but Saturday doesn't work, so dooooom.

Cats: Twelve paws!

Writing: Check, kinda sorta.

20 September 2009 - Sunday

Food: Cauliflower-anchovy spaghetti! I missed out on the tomato-sauce spaghetti (Mariths naturally fear cauliflower), but the little bit of sauce I got was pretty tasty.

Gaming: Thrace! Lycoris did not get to kill any more pit fiends, or really do much of anything except help get lost in the trackless forest of goblins, wolves, and claimjumpers. Well, maybe someday I'll make a character who isn't completely useless.

It could happen!

Cats: Ayse's kitties are almost as cute as my kitties!

Writing: Check.

Lycoris by marith (Mon Sep 21 20:52:13 2009)

Lycoris is not at all useless! And we established she has a shiny plaque around her neck to prove it!

Re: Lycoris by Trip (Tue Sep 22 13:45:24 2009)

I dunno, I think the first two rules of making an useful D&D characters are 1) don't make a wizard, and 2) don't put points into Charisma unless your class requires it. #3 is probably "Don't use classes from the PHB" but at least everyone in the group is equal there.

Work: Likelihood of additional time: high. And they finally sent us the scripts that they would like incorporated!

Gaming: After two months, Earthdawn! Isidari charmed some poor Tskrang into lending her his glider, which crashed into the restaurant where Kamekane was dining with a troll woman who had large, shapely dermal plates. She spent the rest of the session conspicuously doing nothing while whistling innocuously.

The people with brains found out that the mage who created most of the group's magic items is regarded as a traitor and mass murderer in one of the cities they visited on the way to Bartertown, which doesn't really fit with his reputation everywhere else he went. Investigation is ongoing, and may result in either more key knowledges to level up magic items, or degenerate cannibals lurking in a ghost town. (That's an inclusive OR, of course.)

Food: Ken let me parasitize the spaghetti carbonara and Dire Chard he made. (No, seriously, these chard leaves were like two feet long! The chard that ate Sheboygan!)

Cats: I bribed Marmalade and Ghirardelli with kitty treats when I trimmed their claws, which made them much more accepting of the process!

Writing: Check, finally, somehow!

15 September 2009 - Tuesday

Work: More discussion of additional time. Answer upgraded to "probably".

Visual Entertainments:

  • Eden of the East 1-2: Where can I get one of those phones?
  • Avatar 2.10-2.11: That was a pretty cool spirit!
  • Bleach 154-155: Reincorporation FTWAngst!

Food: One piece of FPD pizza does not offend my stomach. Next, I'll try two pieces!

Cats: Twelve paws!

Writing: Continued FAIL.

14 September 2009 - Monday

Work: There was discussion of whether the client for the weekend's contract is willing to pay for more time to get everything finished up. Answer: definitely perhaps!

Cats: The kitties were not best pleased by the woodchipping going on outside. They all came out and sat in the livingroom and kitchen so they could keep an eye on what was going on. Even Aspen sat near where I was sitting, I think so that if the woodchipper monster attacked, she could push me into its maw and make her escape.

Writing: No excuse, just FAIL.

13 September 2009 - Sunday

Work: No work today. Shoulder still hurts.

Gaming: Apparently the multistage copying process whereby I condense all the monster stats for an encounter onto one page is actually useful. Having spent the preceding few days using up all my brain on work or stressing about work, I was reduced to copying several pages from MM, MM2, and Open Grave before running off to game and then shuffling through them all during encounters, which was a real pain. However, I was able to abuse the PCs with uncooperative kobolds, loser duergar, zombie rat-dogs, big honkin' undead, way too many stairs, ambitious acolytes of evil, duergar ninja, and the worst city map ever drawn. Uh, go me?

Cats: Twelve paws!

Writing: Still too stupid for anything except FAIL.

Work: Fewer hours of installing software, but still many. Ow, my brain. Also, ow my shoulder. If I end up doing any more of this working from home, I need to get a speakerphone, or at least a headset.

We've now used up the alloted days, but are not finished, possibly because at the last minute the job changed from setting up one server and its clients to setting up three servers, not all running the same OS, and not all with the same set of clients. Eh. These things happen.

Visual Entertainments: Finished fourth disc of Soul Hunters. Wow, that's some impending tragedy.

Cats: Marmalade tried to be affectionate, but I had to do work! :(

Writing: Additional FAIL.

Work: Oog, ten hours of installing software. But, I might get paid for it! (Er, not that I'm assuming bad faith on the part of anyone involved! It's just that life on the surface of a planet is inherently precarious.)

Visual Entertainments: Started fourth disc of Soul Hunter.

Cats: You can tell I am the worst cat-dad ever by the way I spent all day with my paws on the little squares where no one else is allowed to put their paws, instead of playing chase with Ghirardelli.

Writing: No more brain = FAIL.

9 September 2009 - Wednesday

Work: Sounds like at least some of the people involved in the work on Friday and Saturday are in agreement about what needs to be done. Some of what we agree on is even related to the original spec for the project, w00t!

Gaming: If I were clever, I would prepare for D&D before having to work.

Visual Entertainments: Started the third disc of Soul Hunters. Still enh. I wonder if Netflix would be more competent about sending me things from the head of my queue?

Food: Bad parasite, no caffeine after lunch.

Cats: Usually Aspen is Well-Concealed Kitteh, but today she was Adventurous Kitteh! When I got up, I found her sitting on the back of the couch, and later in the afternoon she went and sprawled in the middle of the balcony where there was a sunbeam! Yay Aspen!

Writing: Check. Still sucks.

Work: Arrangements for two-day contract this weekend moved forward: check.

Visual Entertainments:

  • Kurau Phantom Memory 23-24: That was a pretty good ending!
  • Eden of the East 1-2: FAIL! Stupid soft subs. The opening looked interesting, though!
  • Moyashimon 1-2 (emergency backup for EotE: Ow, my brain! I liked it okay, but Marith exercised her right to veto any anime that features fermented meat, even though that was only in one episode.
  • Avatar 2.9: Dooooooom!
  • Bleach 153: Huh, I guess there are girl arrancar after all. (Or maybe cross-dressing arrancar with falsies, as Marith pointed out.)

Cats: Twelve adorable paws!

Writing: Check.

fermented meat? by Graydon (Thu Sep 10 12:24:57 2009)

Lactic fermentation of meat is responsible for most traditional dry sausage, yet somehow, I do not believe that it is this to which Marith is objecting.

Does one lose SAN if one finds out what it is to which Marith objects in this instance?

Re: fermented meat? by Trip (Thu Sep 10 14:41:03 2009)

Good point. I should have said "fermented animals" to communicate the true horror.

According to CoC 5.2, it's only 0/1d2 SAN loss until the crazy professor gets involved and kicks it up a notch or two, maybe as far as 0/1d6.

I think the cute marshmallowy microbes have a protective effect, though.

Weekend contract by Jeremy (Thu Sep 10 19:12:08 2009)

Does this mean no PAD&D4?

Re: Weekend contract by Trip (Thu Sep 10 22:56:18 2009)

I am sad to realize that I have not lived my life in such a way that you could safely assume that if there were going to be changes in the schedule, I would have already notified you.

Anyway, the head guy on this project is bailing on them at like 16:00 on Saturday, so it seems unlikely that I will have to work on Sunday.

Re: fermented meat? by marith (Thu Sep 10 22:56:30 2009)

The anime in question is about a boy who sees microbes. Happy, cute, dancing microbes. Dancing around rotting corpses, spoiled sake, foot fungus, college student dorm rooms...

It'd take some awfully snappy dialogue and a really cool plot to make me watch a show with decaying organic matter as a focal point of every scene. I suppose such an anime might exist, but Moyashimon is not it :)

Happy, cute, dancing microbes... by Graydon (Fri Sep 11 07:22:10 2009)

would be rather hard to take, I do suppose.

I can see it better with grim, focused microbes; stern yeast going off to conquer the starches and die, coincidentally making beer, mycophagous microbes being all steam punk about the battle with the anti-biotic compounds, the stubborn refusal to surrender all hope of conquest in the case of the vast body, from which white blood cells chiefly come...

Through, really, it'd be ever so much worse in SmellOVision.

7 September 2009 - Monday

Work: No work today, it's Labor Day!

Gaming: Ayse went with the Mittgirls and their mom to celebrate successful state fair boothage by eating fondue, or something like that, so Ken had to drag Mike and I to Neil's for board gaming. Neil won the first game of Dominion he ever played, darn him. Then we tried to play The Scepter of Zavandor but couldn't finish because Mike had to head back. When we quit, Stacy was ahead, but that might have been because she had the character who gets lots of benefits up front and wedidn't make it into the endgame. On the other hand, she was doing pretty well in general!

Random Encounters: I think Ebeth is taller than when I last saw her a few weeks ago.

Food: I think I need to be more restrained in my pizza-eating henceforth.

Cats: Twelve paws!

6 September 2009 - Sunday

Food: Ken provided us all with Eggs Benedict (well, eggs Flora (avocado instead of hollandaise) for Ayse) and figs with truffle goat cheese for brunch, and posole for dinner, because that is the kind of Ken he is. Marith even ate the posole, despite it being green and potentially spicy and not native to New England!

Gaming: First, Dominion. Dave crushed us all like bugs. Then, Thrace! Lycoris, 4th level wizard, got to one-punch a pit fiend! (Admittedly, it was a pit fiend who was immobilized and at one hit point from being pinned to the floor with a Holy Avenger for two hundred years.) The horrible old gnoll and the animated demon-blood goop were much more trouble, but eventually they were dealt with, and no one important was crushed by the imploding cathedral.

Next, bandits! (Then, doom, because Ayse and Ken will have a baby, which is much more like yodeling than like tuna.)
