The ANIMATIONS which follow can be seen
only with the Netscape 2.x browser as of May 17, 1996. This truly
superior software can be downloaded free with a bit of stubborn
determination. A link to Netscape's website and download menu can
be found by clicking the Betz cells:
Also, my animation files are fair sized, up to the 50K range - I've read 1K/second may be average transmission speed so patience and perseverance. I'll try to make the animations worth the wait.
"Electrodiagnostic testing" refers to nerve conductions (NCV) and electromyography (EMG).
NCV/EMG is an old diagnostic technique enjoying great popularity today based, I suspect, on its remarkable dependability in the diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
If the conduction delay from above the wrist to the forefinger is more than 4 milliseconds the diagnosis is almost certain or as one patient with job-related Carpal Tunnel put it: "You get this test and they leave you alone."
NCV has no downside but EMG involves multiple needle sticks and should be used judiciously and carefully. It is not helpful, in my experience, for neck or low back without findings on clinical exam e.g. weakness, relfex asymmetries or dermatomal sensory loss. The MRI scan is a superior test for neck and low back abnormalities.
I have many years of experience with this test and am a member of the American Academy of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.
