The Night is Alive

Victorian Fantasy

SAN FRANCISCO BAY
Snoopy and his Camel greeted me on my arrival here in 1969 and just in the past year went the way of the rest of the "junk sculpture" which adorned the mud flats in those Renaissance years. May he live forever in cyberspace.

Fall equinox, 1984, a most unusual lightning display went on all night in the Bay Area.
These were taken looking west over Oakland toward San Francisco from my backyard in the Oakland Hills. I left the shutter open until I had "collected" several bolts and discovered that any exposure from ten to thirty seconds worked. Nighttime photography in black and white is very forgiving.
FIRE
Fall equinox again, October 20, 1991. The hot dry winds coming the wrong way, from the baking landmass, combined with human ineptitude to produce a firestorm on my way to work. These were taken with a plastic one-time-only camera I try to keep nearby.

Boreal, where I-80 crosses the Pacific Crest Trail is very user friendly. My ancient Shawn Palmer board is too heavy to get much air without a kicker and Boreal's got lots of them.
