The Great Earthquake of Lisbon, November 1, 1755, 9:20 AM. Nov 1, All Saint's Day or All Hallow's Day, is an important date in this story: it is one year to the day later that Casanova finally escapes. At the stroke of midnight on Halloween he pops his through a hole in the leaded roof, sees a full moon and people strolling the courtyard, and pops back in. This is in Part Two.
THIS SNAPSHOT
was taken 7/31/96. It shows the interior courtyard of the Doge's Palace. Note the dormer windows. After the moon sets, Casanova and Father Balbi climb out on the roof but can't find a way down and make their way back into the Palace through one of these windows. Casanova slips and dangles from the marble gutter by his armpits, working out a leg cramp.
This shot also shows the church doors into which Father Balbi felt impelled to run. Casanova rejected the plan. The church hadn't provided refuge from police in centuries.
Instead, he strides boldly across the courtyard reminding Balbi to look neither left nor right and meet no one's eyes. He and Balbi get into a gondola and they're off.
