Footnote 17

Aerial View, St. Mark's - Casanova's prison

The secret reports of Casanova's spy and accuser, Jean Baptiste Manuzzi, have been published. they include the following sample written in the months just preceding the arrest:

"Besides his numerous friendships with Noble Patricians, Casanova has conspired with some of them to introduce foreigners to gambling to take their money. Word on the street has it that Casanova cheats. The aforesaid Casanova makes believe he won't die but will be sweetly transported by Fra Bernardo who will come to lead him up the Milky Way to the region of adepts. With such diabolical Rosicrucian claims....he exercises a certain influence over certain persons - as he has done with Our Honorable Ser Zuanne Bragadino and other Noble Patricians - to take their money...I was told Casanova recited an atheistic poem in Venetian dialect which he is working on..."

Manuzzi was ordered (by ?Inquisitor Condulmer) to get the poem on his visit in the guise of a diamond broker, but he was unsuccessful. he reported, however, seeing among other suspicious items "a kind of leather apron such as is worn by people who call themselves Masons in their so-called Lodges."

Masons in their so-called Lodges

The Venetian Autocracy, more atherosclerotic than any other, had reason to fear the ideas of the Freemasons.
