After more than six centuries, the Inquisition was finally abolished with Napoleon's entry into Venice in 1797, its first occupation ever. Napoleon put a definitive end to religious intolerance. He replaced it with secular intolerance.
He also took these horses with him when he left the next year. The Venetians had originally looted them from Constantinople in 1204 where the Turks originally looted them from Greece where they are said to date from the 4th Century BC.
