Sagirah's Grimoire

5In/Aq6Subtle Taste of Poison and Purity R: Touch D: Conc T: Small
Determines all the mundane properties of a liquid that you touch with your tongue.
5Cr(Re)/Au5Chamber of Spring Breezes R: Reach D: Sun/Perm T: Room/Str
Creates a breeze of fresh air that continually moves throughout a room, keeping the air continuously breathable even if the room is airtight.
10Cr/Co13Bind Wound R: Touch/Near D: Sun/Inst T: Ind
Typically, you place your hands on the target and pass them over the wound, which magically seals itself and stops bleeding. Any subsequent recovery rolls necessitated by the wound are made at +1.
5In/Co8Physician's Eye R: Sight D: Mom T: Ind
Determines the general health of a single person. Specific afflictions appear to you as areas of yellow coloration on the person's body. A Perception + Medicine stress roll is required to identify unusual diseases. The ease factor is determined by the rarity of the disease.
5Mu/Co14Eyes of the Cat R: Touch D: Sun/Year T: Ind
The target gains the eyes of a cat, which allow him or her to see in near darkness (but not in absolute darkness, such as a lightless subterranean cavern).
5Pe/Co8Skin of the Infant * R: Near D: Mom T: Ind
  Target's hair falls out.
10Re/Co17Golden Silence * R: Near D: Sun, T: Ind
  Target is unable to talk.
4In/He12Probe Nature's Hidden Lore R: Touch/Near D: Mom T: Ind
Tells you what kind of plant you are touching. You also get an image of it in its natural habitat. Works with plant products as well as with plants themselves.
15Re/He21Dancing Spindle * R: Near, D: Sun, T: Small
  Animates spindle.
10Mu/He18Veiling * R: Touch, D: Sun, T: Small
Converts nearby plant matter to veil.

3Cr/Ig8Lighting of the Lamps * R: Near D: Mom/Perm T: Small

10Re/Im12Wizard's Sidestep R: Per/Touch D: Sun T: Ind
Your image appears up to 1 pace from where you actually are, so attacks aimed there are likely to miss you. Whenever the image is successfully struck, it disappears and reappears in another spot.

History

1219 Journeyed to Alexandria.

1220 First adventure, rescued girl.

1222 Labyrinth, barge of Nephthys - more to investigate later.

Background

Noone remembers what she looks like anymore. There's a regular conversation down at the tavern about it. Some say she's ugly as a camel, twisted like one of her hexes; some say her face is of such surpassing beauty men were dazzled by it, and that's how the trouble started. But there's no disagreement at all about her temper.

When Sagirah gets mad at you - and anything will set her off, a sidelong glance, a door shut hastily as she passes, or if she catches you making the sign against evil - bad things happen. For example, when her sister Nadia finally got betrothed (her first suitor ran like a scared jackrabbit when Sagirah first pulled her stunt, and it took them years to find another), she called Sagirah the blight of her life and barred her from the wedding. Next day, the bridegroom and his family arrive in splendid array, Nadia waits covered in silks and jewels...and this NOSE grows out from her face of a sudden, pushing out the bridal veil. A huge bulbous obscene thing, like a root. Of course everyone screamed and ran, and Nadia fainted dead away when she felt her face. The father paid half his purse to keep the groom there for the wedding, and the nose disappeared at sunset, but what do you expect when you insult a witch?

Another time, Hosni - you remember Tulun's eldest? - came home from his journey, nineteen years old and tall and strong, and of course dying to prove his manhood to all the girls. For a dare, he waylaid Sagirah in the market and tried to pull off her veil. She gave the most _piercing_ scream and pointed at him, clutching her face - and his hair fell out. All of it, even the mustache he was so proud of. (Not just the mustache - the girls were giggling about it for months.) So he struck her down, and she drew her knife and went for him, and it was blood on the sands until I pulled them apart. There was a great outcry after that, and Tulun demanded her death or banishment; but Iella calmed him down with a payment, and healed the slashes on Hosni's face, and said she would leave Sagirah with her broken leg as punishment. She's limped ever since. Makes her look even more fearsome, a little squat creature stumping down the street dragging her leg behind. Dogs and children run from her, and even the birds screech when she passes.

Iella did so much for her. That woman was a saint, or a good djinn. Who else would have taken her in when she left her father's house? Right on her twelfth birthday, after taking the veil for the first time, she swore she'd never show her face again nor marry, and stalked out and up to the old woman's house. They say she curdled all the milk in the house that day, but I don't put stock in idle tales; everyone knows the hexes came later. She was only a spitfire girl-brat then. Iella taught her herb-lore and healing and weaving and Allah knows what else of her strange ways - safer not to ask - and I will say for her she worked hard for the woman. But never a kind word has she had for anyone else in her life, and even healing she's silent and sullen. Not like Iella; not a town in five hundred miles could boast her like, and we never cared where she came from or what she knew.

Murder? Of course not. If that girl had an ounce of human feeling she loved Iella, and it certainly does look like it, her being laid out so neat and careful on the bed and all, and the house cleaned. It's my belief she died in her sleep, and Sagirah had more sense than to stay. Tulun and her father and a dozen others'd like to see her pay for her crimes, and it's only the old woman stopped them all those years. Likely she's off to live in the desert as a hermit. When? Yesterday morning, to the south. Good riddance, I say.
