Cal Basketball Stats

The current stats are really skimpy, until I can get some real numbers for the Texas Southern and Minnesota games. In the meantime, at least there are scoring numbers.

The "Net" stat

I get asked a lot about the stat called "Net" in my stat reports. Here is a very quick-and-dirty explanation. "Net" is a statistic I made up. It was an attempt to calculate roughly the net balance of good and bad things a player does on the court. I basically add up the "good" stats like shots made, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks, then subtract the "bad" stats: shots missed, fouls, turnovers.

I have no idea whether this stat really means anything. All I can say is that it seems to correlate with conventional wisdom, in that players generally regarded as better (Jason Kidd, for example) tend to have higher "Net" stats than less heralded players. Although I have not done detailed analysis, it also appears that a team's "Net" correlates reasonably well with winning. My guess is that it would help to compare with the opposing team's "Net".

Anyway, the formula is basically something like this:

(FGM + OR + DR + A + S + Blk) - ((FGA - FGM) + PF + TO)
