How to set up file access to Idiom's disk drives

Background

Windows has a network filesytem built-in. Idiom supports a fileserver using this filesystem. There are a couple names for this: SMB, NetBIOS, and Samba.

Support

Getting SMB to work properly can be quite difficult and is beyond the scope of the support provided by Idiom. Our servers are set up correctly, but it's up to you to set up your client. We say this only because it is only by saying this that we can offer this service at all.

How to use it

There are two steps to using SMB: client and server. On the server side, you need to create a SMB password for your account. This can be done using the Account Management Wizard. Select "Change Passwords" and the add a SMB password. You must do this to use SMB.

If you are not directly connected to Idiom through DSL, ISDN, or dialup, you must ask us to reconfigure our server to allow you access. We will need to know your IP address.

On the client side, the following need to be set:

The following shares are available:

Please note: for security reasons your home directory is not normally available. In fact the \\IDIOM\HOMES share points to a directory that needs to be created with the following shell commands:

cd mkdir pcdir

Windows 95/98

To configure Windows 95/98 the following steps are required.
1. Open MyComputer -> Control Panel -> Network -> Configuration
2. If it doesn't list "Client for Microsoft Netorks", install it.
3. Select "TCP/IP" and click "Properties".
4. Select "Wins Configuration"
5. Add the Wins server 216.240.32.1.
6. Select "Bindings"
7. Check "Client for Microsoft Networks"
8. Open MyComputer -> Control Panel -> Network -> Identification
9. Name your computer (probably use your login name)
10. Set your Workgroup to "IDIOM"
11. Open MyComputer -> Control Panel -> Network -> Access Control
12. Select "Share level access control"
13. Reboot your computer
14. When logging into your own computer, log log in with your Idiom username.
    This is required.
15. Open Start -> Programs -> Windows Explorer
16. Select Tools -> Map Network Drive
17. Pick a drive letter
18. Enter \\idiom\cgi
19. Enter your SMB password
That should be it. Let us know if we missed any steps.

Windows NT

To configure Windows NT the following steps are required.
1. Open MyComputer -> Control Panel -> Network -> Services
2. Make sure that "Workstation" is installed.
3. Open MyComputer -> Control Panel -> Network -> Identification
4. Set your workgroup to be "IDIOM"
5. Open MyComputer -> Control Panel -> Network -> Protocols -> TCP/IP Networking -> Properties -> WINS Address
6. Set your WINS Server to 216.240.32.1.
7. Reboot
8. Open Start -> Programs -> Windows Explorer
9. Select Tools -> Map Network Drive
10. Pick a drive letter
11. Enter \\idiom\cgi
12. Enter your Idiom username
13. Enter your SMB password
