Step 2. Click More.
Step 3. On the left-hand side, near the top, click Manually. Then click OK.
Step 4. Enter your IP address. You IP address is given to you when you get your account. Click More.
Step 5. Enter your Gateway address. If your IP address is something like 206.14.80.38 then your Gateway address will be 206.14.80.1.
Step 6. Enter your domain name servers. In the Domain column put idiom.com; in the the IP Address column enter 140.174.82.4; in the first row and 140.174.82.12 in the second row. Check the the Default box for 140.174.82.4.
Step 7. The Class and Subnet Mask don't really matter, but if you want to put them in the Class is C and the Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0.
Step 8. Click OK
Step 9. Remove the file System Folder:MacTCP DNR.
Step 10. Remove the file System Folder:Preferences:MacTCP Prep.
Step 11. Restart your Macintosh. This can be done later. It must be done before you try to use MacPPP.
Step 2. Enter idiom as the new PPP Server.
Step 3. Click on Config.
Step 4. Choose a Port speed for your modem. Modems have two speeds: the speed with which they talk to other modems and the speed with which they talk to your computer. This is the speed that it talks to your computer. You want to use as high speed as you can. You may need to consult your modem manual. Almost all 28.8 modems can do 57600 and some can do 115200.
Step 5. Select hardware flow control: CTS & RTS (DTR).
Step 6. Enter the phone number. The Berkeley number is (510) 849-4926. Other numbers are documented elsewhere.
Step 7. Enter your modem init string. In this init string, you need to make sure that your modem uses the highest speeds possible and that it uses hardware flow control. The only Macintosh modem I know the setup string for is the Global Village Powerport and it has the messiest setup string I've ever seen: AT\J0\N7%C1&C2&D3\V2\Q3.
Step 8. Click on Connect Script.
Step 9. On the first line, click on Out and CR. Leave the text area blank.
Step 10. On the second line, click on Wait and enter gin: in the text box.
Step 11. The third line should be, Out, your account/login name, and CR. In this instance only your login name should have its first letter capitalized.
Step 12. The forth line should Wait for ssword:.
Step 13. Send (Out) your password on the fifth line with a CR.
Step 14. Click OK.
Step 15. Click Done.
Step 16. If you haven't rebooted your computer since changing your MacTCP config, do that now.
Step 17. Click Open. Good luck.
